Car 39 – 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback V8 (5 Litre)
I spotted the Mustang online at a dealers in Iowa in early October 2012. The car had spent many years in Minnesota and had been well cared for.
Although the car was an auto with a small block 289, what really caught my eye was that the documentation showed this was originally the sought after “S” code fastback with the big block 390 engine, manual gearbox and 9” heavy duty rear axle. Good options too – Deluxe trim, black interior, center console, fold down rear seat, tinted glass. The car looked in good condition and had been family owned and cared for many years and had stacks of receipts for parts.
The dealer guys were really friendly and provided lots of images and information. They even sourced a 4-speed top-loader manual gearbox that they shipped with the car (now fitted).
The deal was done and I crossed my fingers.
The car was duly collected and transported to New Jersey by Schumacher Cargo and was then in storage on the coast ready for shipping in late October when Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast.
“How’s the car” was my 1st question when I called the warehouse. “We don’t know, the whole area has been evacuated” was the reply. Oh well fingers crossed. Good news a few days later was that it came through fine.
Fast forward to the 6th February 2013 when I finally took delivery. Heck of a wait due to the backlog of freight coming out of NJ after the storm. I was really pleased, car was dusty but in super condition and fired up 1st time.
Improvements I made over the years have included fitting new disk front brakes (a big improvement over the factory drums), wheels and tires, manual gearbox plus collecting all the parts to build a big block 390 (to restore the car to original at some point) although the 289 is pretty lively and sounds great so I’m in no great hurry.
I have had a few Mustangs but this is definitely my favourite. The 67-68 fastbacks just look so right. You cannot pop out without someone taking a shot of it! It has been very popular as a wedding hire car on the web site and everyone loves it. I even had the pleasure of Kylie Minogue choosing my Mustang Fastback for filming as part of her Golden Tour in the UK in 2018.
